Choose a predator mouth-call reed by treating reed labels as a starting point rather than a fixed sound definition. For closed reeds, thinner medium-voice single reeds are a useful starting direction for cottontail-style distress, while thicker loud-voice reeds and double reeds are useful starting directions for jackrabbit and larger-prey sounds. The same reed can produce different voices after a small tuning bend or when installed in a different call body. For open reeds, compare reed length, thickness, and shape together with the tone board and body. Why There Is No Universal “Cottontail Reed”

Call Builder A may use one reed model in a compact body, add a small bend, and sell the finished call as a raspy cottontail. Call Builder B may use the same reed with a different body, different mounting depth, and less tuning, then call the finished voice a jackrabbit.

Both can be reasonable because the reed's commercial model number does not dictate the finished animal sound. It describes a component with certain physical and voice characteristics. The final sound is the interaction of the complete call.

This is also why major call makers often do not disclose their exact reed model or tuning. Their combination of reed, bend, body, and bore is part of the product design and may be treated as a trade secret.

Ask For A Starting Point, Not A Guaranteed Recipe

When talking to another builder, ask what reed family, voice, thickness, or single/double style they would test first. Expect to do your own tuning and body matching.

What Medium Voice And Loud Voice Actually Tell You

Voice labels help organize a large reed catalog. A medium-voice reed generally suggests a reed intended to operate at a moderate range of pressure and output. A loud-voice reed is generally intended to accept more air and produce stronger output.

That does not mean medium voice automatically equals cottontail and loud voice automatically equals jackrabbit. A tuned loud-voice reed can produce a raspy cottontail character, while a medium voice in a larger resonant body may sound bigger than expected.

Use the label to predict behavior—air requirement, output, stiffness, rasp potential—not to define the animal sound before testing.

Single Reeds vs. Double Reeds

A single closed reed uses one vibrating reed and often produces a cleaner, more direct tone. It is a strong starting point because the builder can hear the effect of body and tuning without the additional interaction of a second reed.

A double reed uses two vibrating elements and can add rasp, texture, and complexity. It may also require more air or a different body to perform well.

Double reeds are useful when the builder wants a rougher jackrabbit, larger-prey, or squaller-type voice, but they are not automatically better. A well-tuned single reed can produce plenty of rasp.

Closed-Reed Tuning Can Change What The Same Reed Becomes

A thin, flat object is slid underneath the reed and lifted gently. Razor blades and thin knives are commonly used by builders because they are flat, but they must be handled carefully. A dedicated thin tuning tool or other smooth flat shim can accomplish the same basic positioning task with less cutting hazard.

The adjustment should be tiny. Bend, remove the tool, test, and repeat only if needed. Once the reed has too much bend, it may not return to its original response and can be ruined.

The Call Body Can Change Reed Selection

A reed that works perfectly in one call body may feel wrong in another. Body length, internal bore, reed depth, bell shape, material, and exhaust opening influence back pressure and resonance.

A tight body can make a reed feel more resistant. A larger body can add resonance or change how a loud reed projects. Acrylic and natural horn bodies can also differ in wall shape and internal volume even when the reed seat is similar.

For controlled testing, keep one body constant while comparing reeds. Then keep the winning reed constant while testing body changes. That one-variable-at-a-time method is far more informative than swapping both simultaneously.

Sleeves, Bushings, And Direct Fit Can Change The Test

A closed reed can be inserted directly into the call body, placed in a tapered metal sleeve, or held by a rubber bushing. These methods affect serviceability, fit, and sometimes the way the call feels under air.

Open-Reed Selection Uses A Different Set Of Variables

Open reeds are commonly cut to different lengths, thicknesses, widths, and shapes. Each variable changes stiffness, pitch potential, air requirement, and volume capability.

Tone Boards Determine Whether An Open Reed Works

The tone board controls reed support, curvature, air channel, and the surface the caller's lips use to change effective reed length. A reed that feels perfect on one board can squeal, stall, or become too stiff on another.

When a combination works, record the reed material, length, attachment position, and tone-board model before making further changes.

A cottontail call used in brush needs a different priority from a loud open-country jackrabbit call. Select for the real field pressure range, not the loudest sound possible.

Coon Squaller Reed Selection Uses Similar Experimentation

Coon squallers often use closed reeds similar to those used in loud jackrabbit-type calls. Strong voice, rasp, and volume are common goals.

That does not mean every jackrabbit reed automatically produces a good squaller. Body length, exhaust shape, single vs. double reed, and tuning still determine the final voice.

If building squallers, test several louder reed families and document the body combination that creates the aggressive tone you want.

Research Other Builders—Then Expect To Experiment

Call-building forums, experienced hobby builders, and local makers can provide useful starting points. Some builders are generous with reed information; established commercial makers may not disclose exact reed models because they consider the combination proprietary.

Use shared information to narrow the test range, not as a guarantee. Buy a sampler, hold the body constant, try multiple reeds, and adjust bend only after you have heard the untreated version.

The builder who develops a repeatable testing method eventually depends less on secret recipes because they understand how the variables interact.
